<image:title>Blog - Protect Your Cool-Season Garden from Frost and Snow - A cloche is a small, dome-shaped cover that provides good frost protection for individual plants. Traditional cloches were made of glass, but today’s options include plastic and even water-filled walls that insulate plants. You can also make a simple DIY cloche by placing a 5-gallon bucket over your plants. For extra protection against cold and snow, lay a blanket on top.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Direct Sow Seed Starting - This approach optimizes garden space, resulting in increased production. Intensive planting in Colorado also minimizes bare soil exposure to weeds, the intense summer sun, and desiccation. <image:title>Blog - Direct Sow Seed Starting - To determine spacing for intensive planting, refer to the seed packet or the seed supplier’s website for their spacing recommendations. Usually, you’ll find both a seed spacing number and a row spacing number. Disregard the row spacing number as it does not apply to raised garden beds. Instead, focus solely on the seed spacing number. This number indicates the actual spacing between plants.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Winter Interest in the Colorado Garden - Deciduous trees also contribute to winter interest in the garden. While they shed their leaves, their bark texture, color and branching shapes offer structure and visual appeal. Some deciduous trees retain their leaves until spring growth prompts shedding, a trait known as “persistent”. This trait can apply to leaves or fruit and is something to consider when shopping for trees or shrubs.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Support The Monarch Butterfly In Colorado - Female monarchs only lay their eggs on the milkweed species (Asclepias species) because that’s the sole food source for the caterpillars. There are two native milkweed species in Colorado: Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) and Antelope horn milkweed or Spider Milkweed (Asclepias asperula). However, there are many non-native species of milkweed that are also appropriate. Just be sure the scientific name starts with Asclepias so that the monarch caterpillars will be able to eat it.</image:title>
